The Question

Interviewer: Catherine Lim, there’s no evading THE question this time: what’s your sex life like?

Me: Well, when the Queen of England was asked what she thought of marriage, she said she was ‘for it’…

Interviewer: If you don’t mind, I really am not interested in the Queen of England’s views on marriage. Let me ask again—what’s your—

Me: Once a young, handsome pastor who was known for his conservative views on courtship and sex, was asked: ‘Sir, what do you think of dates?’ He replied, ‘Well, they’re okay if you don’t eat too many of them and get indigestion.’

Interviewer: Excuse, Dr Lim, but you’re once more evading my question. What’s—

Me: There was a certain Lord Chesterfield of nineteenth century England who was asked what he thought of sex. He said huffily, ‘The pleasure is momentary, the position ridiculous, the cost damnable!’ Well, I disagree with his lordship on all three points!

Interviewer (sighing): I suppose if that’s the closest I can get to an answer, I should start working on my article. I was going to title it ‘The Confident Mature Woman’, with the sub ‘No Coyness—Telling it as it is’…
